What are these שכיות החמדה?

KJV Translates “pleasant pictures”.  This presumably comes from משכית which is related to idolatry, and might mean “show-piece” or “carved figure” (BDB).  But this misses the parallelism in each of there verses.  The halves of each verse are parallel to each other, which would imply that שכיות החמדה might have something to do with אניות תרשיש.

BDB comments that the translation of שכיה is “very dub[ious]“!  And suggests imagery, watchtowers,, standards, or ships.

Brenton’s English translation of the LXX has “and upon every ship of the sea, and upon every dislpay of fine ships”.  Targum Yonatan has וְעַל כָּל דְיָתְבִין בְּנִיסֵי יַמָא וְעַל כָּל דְשָׁרָן בְּבִירַנְיָתָא שַׁפִּירָן, and Rashi follows this translation, “beautiful castles”.  רד”ק explains that שכיות are drawings, which supports the KJV.

The דעת מקרא commentary by עמוס חכם, published by מוסד הרב קוק, has:

But there are no notes to indicate who translates this way or what the Egyptian support for this translation is.
